The Clarence series

Growing up in Grafton was drenched in colour and pageantry—festivals, carnivals and always, trees.

The mango tree brushed against my bedroom wall. The jacarandas took over spring in a haze of lavender-blue. And the flame trees—those were ours.

They flared up just before summer, fluorescent and fleeting, standing sentinel as the heat rolled in.

Before Cold Chisel made them famous, we already knew their power—how they could light up a memory, or stop you in your tracks.

Every season had its own rhythm, its own texture. This painting is part of a series honouring those flame trees—symbols of nostalgia, resilience, and everything that burns bright, even if only for a moment.
